FW23 theme

Existing at the crossroads of inheritance, assimilation, reinvigoration, and difference, Chiahung Su’s SS23 collection weaves thefar-reaching historical tapestry of the Austronesian peoples, placing Taiwan as their pre-historic homeland. Through its ongoing partnership with revered artist and preservationist Yuma Taru, the label retraces the cultural threads that connect this diverse group of aboriginal peoples, now dispersed across the South Pacific from the heartlands of Taiwan to the islands of Polynesia.
In addition to utilising Taiwanese-grown cotton, linen, and silk, Chiahung Su and Taru continue to uphold their commitment to a circular biosphere by planting and harvesting their own ramie fibres, weaving them into bespoke textiles using techniques handed down by the Mepuwal tribe’s elders. Hand-woven fabrics take their earthy colours from a plethora of traditional methods: ramie soaks up its sun-bleached hue from the f lesh of Shoulang yams, cottons draw their earthen tones from the skins of pomegranate,
and silks pull their dusky colour from the dyes of blood wood trees and Chinese gall.
This season, Chiahung Su honours the diversity of the Austronesian peoples, engaging both the hands of the Mepuwal tribe’s artisans and Taiwanese Taiyai peoples in reviving their respective handicrafts, passed down across millennia. The narratives of both peoples meet in a series of beautifully co-woven fabrics. Wool yarns, hand-twisted by the Taiyai peoples, interweave with cottons, linens, and ramie fibres, which have been hand-woven by Yuma Taru’s craftsmens. The collection’s textiles come together in a number of traditional patterns: the bow, which casts protection for hunters; the wave, which ref lects the mother of the river; and the rhombus, which symbolizes the eye of the ancestral spirit. As a whole, the collection reads as an anthropological map of the South Pacific, containing the hundred of bloodlines, the thousands of appearances, and the million intertwining footsteps of the diverse and disparate Austronesian peoples.

Brand concept

Built from the foundational concepts of traditional Asian aestheticism, Wabi-Sabi and Mono-NoAware, Chiahung Su’s unisex garments are inspired by the poignant beauty of impermanence and imperfection. Seeking to honour the unique coalescence of East Asian indigenous culture, the label works with ancestral textiles and techniques from both traditions to propose clothes as future heirlooms — all of which crafted from reclaimed materials via 100% sustainable practices.
